What Are the Best Wind Resistant Shingles?

Protect Your Home with These Wind Resistant Shingles

We face all sorts of damaging weather here in Omaha. But while hail and severe storms grab all the headlines, high winds sometimes go overlooked when it comes to roofing threats. At Anchor Roofing, we can tell our readers that wind damage repair is one of the more common services scheduled with our team. To avoid damage from wind, it’s a good idea to start with wind resistant shingles.

Wind resistant shingles are products that better tolerate high winds, both from sudden gusts and from sustained wind. They generally carry a higher wind rating than typical asphalt shingles and can help better protect your home against this common roofing threat. Here are the top wind resistant shingles that our team recommends.

Owens Corning Duration: Embedded SureNail Technology

We generally recommend one of two high wind shingles at Anchor Roofing, and the first of those is Owens Corning Duration. High winds can damage roofs in a number of ways, but most commonly wind damage arises as high winds lift up shingles and tear them away from the roof. The Duration line of wind resistant shingles aims to address this issue through reinforcement that helps to prevent uplift and tearing.

By adding a reinforced area of fabric to the shingle (called “SureNail Technology”), the area where the nail is driven through the shingle is stronger than on typical shingles, helping the shingle to stay together rather than tearing away. These shingles are rated for up to 130 mph of wind resistance.

CertainTeed Landmark: Heavier and Sturdier CertainTeed Landmark shingles, a popular wind resistant choice

The second shingle we most commonly recommend is CertainTeed Landmark. These shingles are among the heaviest shingles on the market, which grants them better wind resistance overall. They include more asphalt, which helps the shingles stay put even in the face of extreme wind storms.

These shingles are rated for up to 110 mph winds with a 15-year warranty. However, that wind rating can increase to 130 mph if the shingles are installed with the complete CertainTeed system of products.

CertainTeed Presidential: Wind Resistance and Elegance

While both the Duration and Landmark shingles provide a beautiful look backed by excellent wind resistance, CertainTeed’s Presidential Shake shingles are a truly premium option for homeowners. Designed with the appearance of natural wood shake, these shingles create a beautiful look.

But that beauty is more than surface-deep, as these are some of the best wind-resistant shingles available, as well. As with Landmark, they have a wind rating of up to 110 or 130 mph depending on the installation, and these shingles are even heavier. This helps them provide superior wind resistance all while adding unmatched curb appeal to your home.

Protect Your Home from Wind and More

All of these shingles are highly resistant to wind damage, but they also stand up well against various types of other damage. As homeowners in Omaha well know, there are numerous threats to roofs in our area. Each of these shingles grade out well for fire resistance, impact damage, and even have features to help them retain their color over longer periods of time.
