The Right Shingles Can Prevent Damage from High Wind
The wide open spaces of the Great Plains are certainly beautiful, but as locals know well, that open space provides plenty of opportunity for wind storms to strike at any time. High wind speeds are one of the top causes of damage to shingles here in the Omaha metro. Depending on the intensity, wind damage can fling debris against your roof, loosen shingles, or even tear roofing materials away entirely.
At Anchor Roofing, wind damage repair is one of our specialties. But in our years working on roofs here in Omaha, we’ve found that one of the best ways to deal with wind damage is to prevent it by installing shingles graded for high wind speeds. Here’s how you can batten down the hatches for your home!
Nebraska Is Among the Windiest States
Why is preventing wind damage so important for homeowners in Omaha? It all comes down to geography. As it turns out, Nebraska is one of the windiest states in the U.S., largely due to the wide open spaces abundant throughout our area.
In addition, we’re also located in tornado alley, and while there’s little you can do to prevent tornado damage to your home, it does speak to the overall need for wind protection for your home.
What High Wind Shingles Do We Recommend?
As experts in wind damage repair and prevention, we’ve found installing wind-resistant shingles to be one of the most effective ways to protect your home. In particular, we recommend two main types of high wind shingles: Owens Corning Duration and CertainTeedLandmark.
Owens Corning Duration
The Duration line of shingles from Owens Corning stands up very effectively to high wind speeds. These shingles are warranty protected to withstand wind speeds of up to 130 mph—truly powerful winds. They do this by providing reinforcement that protects against wind uplift to prevent shingles from being torn away from your roof.
In addition, we think Owens Corning produces truly beautiful shingles thanks to their TruDefinition color platform. These shingles provide incredible durability and contrast to make your roof stand out.
CertainTeed Landmark
Landmark shingles from CertainTeed are another very popular architectural shingle that we highly recommend for protection against wind damage. By default, these shingles are graded for up to 110 mph of wind resistance, with a 15-year warranty that increases to 130 mph when installed as a system with CertainTeed starter, hip, and ridge products.
These shingles are also available in a wide range of colors to perfectly suit your home and give it the look you want.
More Than Just Wind Protection
Of course, protecting your roof is about much more than protecting against wind damage. There are plenty more threats to your roof, including hail, heavy rain, and fires. Luckily, both of these shingles provide much more than just wind protection. Both are resistant to impact damage, provide Class A fire resistance, and include algae resistance warranties.
Potential for Greater Insurance Protection
While every insurance provider and plan is different, it’s worth noting that installing wind-resistant shingles can do more than just protect your home from damage. In some cases, it may be looked upon favorably by your insurance company, leading to better coverage or lower premiums. If you’re considering installing high wind shingles on your roof, it’s a good idea to contact your provider and find out how this may positively impact your insurance coverage.
