Major Storm Strikes Gretna, NE

Roofing Hail Damage Strikes in Gretna and Throughout the Omaha Area

Omaha homeowners are no strangers to roofing hail damage, and recently, Gretna bore the brunt of a massive hail and damaging winds. If you’re in Omaha or nearby, your roof may have taken a hit. On April 17th, a huge supercell brought strong winds, tornado threats, and baseball-sized hail to the area southwest of Omaha, with many homes in nearby Gretna sustaining catastrophic hail damage.

At Anchor Roofing, we’ve already helped dozens of Gretna homeowners recover from this storm—and we’re ready to help more. Here’s more information about the recent storm—and steps homeowners should take if they were impacted.

About the April 17th Hailstorm in Gretna

This storm swept through eastern Nebraska the evening of April 17th. The supercell storm was broad, stretching almost all the way from Omaha to Lincoln, with most of the worst roofing hail damage concentrated southwest of Omaha around Gretna, Ashland, and Waverly.

Hail in Gretna reportedly had a diameter of around 2 inches, and this storm produced hailstones that were baseball-sized and larger in some areas. Hail of this size is large enough to do severe damage to roofs, homes, vehicles, and more—potentially including impact-resistant roofing systems at the larger end of the scale.

Signs of Roofing Hail Damage in Omaha

The result of this incredibly powerful storm was damage to roofing systems, siding, and other property across the area southwest of Omaha as a result of large hail and strong winds. Many roofs were severely damaged to the point of total loss.

In areas farther south, which experienced the largest hail from this storm, siding was shredded by hail. Some homeowners even saw dramatic damage to their windows, as hail broke through, resulting in a frightening situation.

What to Do After a Hailstorm

Those caught in the direct path of this storm will likely already know that they’ve sustained hail damage. In Gretna and other areas of southwestern Omaha, roofing hail damage may be more subtle or difficult to identify. Here are some of the steps homeowners can take following this storm.

Complete a Visual Inspection of Your Home

It isn’t a bad idea for homeowners to survey their homes for signs of damage. Both hail of this size and the wind gusts reported with this storm—reaching up to 80 MPH—can cause significant damage to homes and roofing systems.

Signs you can look for include:

  • Cracked or broken shingles
  • Crooked, loose, or missing shingles
  • Excess asphalt granules below downspouts or around the edge of your roof line
  • Dents or cracks in siding or damage to decks and other exterior areas
  • Dents in soft metals like gutters, fascia, and flashing

Take Photos of Damage

Taking photos of damage once you spot it can help establish a timeline for damage to your home. While homeowners should not climb up to their roof, it can still help to take photos from the ground to begin building a case.

Contact a Roofer for an Inspection

Whether you spot clear signs of hail damage or not, it’s a good idea to contact a roofer to complete a thorough inspection. This should be done before contacting insurance to get a better idea of the extent of damage to your home.

For homes on the fringes of storms, this is an especially important step as hail damage is likely to be less obvious—but significant hail damage is not always apparent from a visual inspection.
